Build Your Very Own Gingerbread House

It is every child’s dream to create the house from Hansel and Gretel. The fairy tale that plays such a huge role in many children’s upbringing is as scary as it is saliva inducing. As adults we may have left the fairy tales behind, but the gingerbread house is still incredibly alluring. So we thought it was about time we turned our chocolate talents to the creation of this mini masterpiece.

To start you need to create cardboard cutout of your house, you will then be able to use this as a template for your tasty creation. Once you have the template for your house you need to make the bread. All you need is a generic gingerbread recipe:

250g unsalted butter
200g dark muscovado sugar
7 tbsp golden syrup
600g plain flour
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
4 tsp ground ginger
(download house template)

We have taken this recipe from the BBC’s gingerbread house recipe, but there are many more online.

To start, get all your ingredients together. Melt the butter, sugar and syrup in a pan and then mix the rest of the ingredients in a separate bowl. Once you have mixed all the ingredients together you should roll out your dough so that it is of the same thickness as a pound coin. This is where your templates come in. Cut out your mixture and place it on a baking tray. Once your gingerbread has baked, the fun begins.

We scoured the internet for inspiration, but decided that as chocolate is our speciality our house should contain as much chocolate as physically possible. So we coated the roof in delicious white chocolate and waited for it to dry before assembling our house. We then used chocolate to detail bricks on the walls and outline the windows. We all love Hansel and Gretel, so why not pay homage to the fairy tale and create your very own gingerbread house!
